Schools Outreach Event for Access to Oxford University

St Thomas More Catholic Teaching School, Bedford

 26 September 2013

On 26th September, 2013, the Oxford University Society Three Shires Branch held its second Oxford University Outreach Event for sixth-form students at schools in our area.  We welcomed over a hundred students, parents and teachers.

After the introductions, we had an excellent presentation from Ellen Maunder of Wadham College explaining the admissions procedure, highlighting the similarities between Oxford and Cambridge and how they differ from other universities.  The same process is followed by all Oxford colleges so they apply an equal standard irrespective of which (if any) college the student nominates.

Dr Richard Earl, tutor for admissions at Worcester College, described the benefits of the tutorial system where each student (and perhaps one other) will meet weekly with their tutor, who will be an acknowledged expert in his subject (and may well have written the standard textbook).  Although examinations, lectures and laboratories are organised by the university the tutorials are in college, which is also the centre of the student's social life.

We then had questions from the floor, which touched on many topics including choice of A levels, the cost of living in college or renting, support for applicants from less-well-off households and pastoral support.

We are grateful to the Principal of St Thomas More Catholic Teaching School, Bedford, for hosting this event, also the head of sixth form and the events manager for their enthusiastic support and refreshments.

The University is keen to support these events and we, as alumni, appreciate the opportunity to give something back.
