Visit to Wrest Park and private tour of the de Grey Mausoleum

Sunday, 17 May 2015

On 17 May we spent most of the day visiting the beautiful gardens and park land at Wrest Park near Luton. About twelve former alumni gathered to enjoy the state rooms and the sweeping terrace, before splitting up and taking whichever route we fancied around the gardens. Some of us used the audio guides to good effect, but the vista of the Long Water, Pavilion and the 18th century mansion were breathtaking.

After lunch at the cafe, some of us went on to Flitton church to have an interesting private guided tour of the De Grey mausoleum. This was kindly organised by one of the alumni who is a local resident. The little known and spacious mausoleum spans several centuries, with the transition of decorative styles much in evidence, from pre-Elizabethen to post-Romantic.
